Selecting a wireless security camera for your system is overwhelming.  But, it can be simplified.

There are a lot of wireless security cameras out in the market.  And they are never ending changes in technologies that brings newer models out as fast as they are invented.

To the normal consumers, the variety of choices can be so overwhelming that they don’t even bother to compare and find the best suited wireless security camera system for their home.

You have to take in account the following factors to find a the right wireless camera to fit your needs.

  • Decide if you need indoor or outdoor cameras… or both
    • Indoor – all cameras are suitable for indoor and dry locations
    • Outdoor – choose a weatherproof camera for general duty or damp locations.  Choose a waterproof camera for wet  and rainy locations
  • Decide on the light and darkness of the area
    • Daytime and normal lighted areas – all cameras should be suitable
    • Nighttime or low lighted areas – choose camera with a minimum light rating of 0.03 lux or lower
    • Dark areas – choose a camera with infrared lighting
  • Decide on the camera types and design
    • Traditional box cameras – they are normally large, lens are usually separate, and can be easily retrofitted to existing system
    • Bullet cameras – compact in design, normally weatherproof which makes it durable, are aesthetically better since they are low profile
    • Dome cameras – very low profile since they are normally concealed and are aesthetically pleasing
    • Pinhole cameras – very small and can be hidden easily
  • Decide on the image color
    • Color monitoring – image details are much more natural and are easily identifiable,  but it requires more light
    • Black and White monitoring – high contrast and can display in higher resolution
    • Auto monitoring – some color cameras will switch to black and white when light levels decreases so it maintains the resolution and details of the video
  • Decide on the power source
    • Plug-in – are not as aesthetically pleasing but provides continual power.  A plug must be in a reachable area
    • Battery – very convenient for installation and aesthetically pleasing.  But, higher maintenance

As you can see, the main thing is to have an idea of what you want your wireless security camera, where you want it, and how you want it to work.

There are a lot of other features that will add to the equation.  But, first keep it simple, find the one that will fit your needs first.  Then, start comparing the features.
